Drug-induced liver injury is the single most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Rezulin was selected for the United States government's largest diabetes study in June, 1996.  It was reported by the L.A. Times that the government doctor who ran the study was also a paid consultant to Warner-Lambert, the drug manufacturer. In October, 1996, Dr. Graham, the first FDA doctor to test  Rezulin warned that Rezulin might harm both the liver and the heart.

Rezulinฎ was recalled in the United States in March 2000 due to liver toxicity. (England banned Rezulin in December, 1997).  At least 63 patients have died of liver failure while taking Rezulin, and many more have suffered liver damage. Warner-Lambert reportedly made $2.1 billion from sales.  Actos has not reported similar levels of liver injuries, but the Food and Drug Administration says that the drugs' liver safety profiles have not been fully determined yet.  These precautions are recommended by the FDA:

• a liver function test should be performed before taking Actos;
• the drugs should not be prescribed in the presence of active liver disease or elevated levels of certain liver enzymes;
• patients using Actos should have liver function tests every 2 months for the first year, and at regular intervals after that;
• the patient's doctor should be immediately alerted at the presentation of any symptoms of liver damage, such as: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fatigue, loss of  energy, loss of appetite, dark urine, unusual itching, or jaundice (yellow coloring of eyes and skin).

Rezulin was prescribed for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus- (non-insulin dependent diabetes).  Actos may also be prescribed for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

These chemicals can attack and injure the liver as well as other organs.  A doctor diagnoses drug-induced liver injury by stopping use of the suspected drug and excluding other liver diseases through diagnostic tests.

Long-term use of a medication can also cause chronic liver damage and scarring (cirrhosis). Medicines that can cause severe liver injury include Acetaminophen, which is known as a cause of severe liver injury when taken in large doses - or in small doses when taken with alcohol.
